New Buick Compact SUV Will Offer Plug-in Hybrid Version in 2011

August 7th, 2009 Wise Car Shopper No comments

2010-buick-crossoverToday General Motors released a teaser photo of a new five-passenger crossover. The vehicle is an addition to its entry-luxury Buick line, which will be fully released in late 2010 and offer direct-injected gasoline plug-in hybrid version of engines in 2011, thus becoming the first mass produced SUV of its kind.

The teaser photo of the new Buick (the company hasn’t named the car yet) is in some way identical to Saturn Vue, which was first introduced in 2008.

With the production of the new Buick, GM intends to win over customers interested in the brand’s full-size Enclave crossover SUV who don’t need something that large. “Some customers who have been drawn to the Enclave were looking for something a little smaller, but they didn’t want to give up craftsmanship or a quiet ride to get there,” said Susan Docherty, general manager of Buick-Pontiac-GMC. “We believe this new Buick will excite those customers, and will continue to broaden the appeal of the brand.”

According to GM, the Buick crossover will be available standard with a 2.4-liter direct-injected 4-cylinder and offer an optional 3.0-liter direct-injected V6, which is expected – deliver 30 miles per gallon or more on the highway.

The company will announce more detailed information on the new Buick SUV closer to the vehicle’s launch date.

2010-buick-lacrosse_5Buick has announced that its new 2010 Buick LaCrosse four-door sedan will receive a fuel-efficient direct-injection 182-horsepower 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine. The new Ecotec engine will have an output of 182 horsepower (136 kW) and 172 lb-ft (233 Nm) of torque. In addition, the new engine is expected to return 20 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Like the V6s, the 182 hp engine will be paired up with a 6-speed automatic transmission although the four will use the smaller 6T40 while the sixes use the larger 6T70.

It should be noted that when LaCrosse was first presented to the public in January, it was powered by 3.0-liter and 3.6-liter direct injected V6s. At that time the LaCrosse’s 255 hp 3.0-liter V6 and 280 hp 3.6-liter V6 average an estimated 17 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.

GM points out that the main competitors of the vehicle are the Lincoln MKZ and Acura TL. However they are not available with four cylinder engines.

Buick LaCrosse to be offered later this year though it is unclear how the four-cylinder will affect the LaCrosse’s base price, which had been set at $27,085 before destination.

Buick Regal 2.0T has us humming

April 21st, 2009 Wise Car Shopper No comments

2104-2buick-regal-20t-shanghaiAdmittedly, Pink Floyd and Buick traditionally go together like asparagus and ice cream, but that hasn’t stopped our inner-monologues from playing “Wish You Were Here” after seeing Buick’s new Regal 2.0T.
According to our compatriots over at Autoblog Simplified Chinese, the Opel Insignia-based model features the company’s 2.0-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine, tuned to give 162 kW of power (217 horsepower) and 350 Nm of torque (258 pound-feet). That’s sufficient gusto to get the General Motors sedan to 62 mph in 7.7 seconds and on to a healthy top whack of 232 kmh (144 mph).
Fuel economy? Well, that’s a good question. Our counterparts in China cryptically point to a figure of 7.2-liters per 90 km (the standard metric is per 100 km), so we’ll have to get back to you on that.
The new Regal 2.0T is expected to join Buick’s Chinese lineup in the second half of 2009.
